This is a pleasant walk that has some spectacular views, it passes through the quiet village of Ulley and round the beautiful Ulley resevoir. The Yellow Lion at the start of this walk is situated at the Eastern end of Aston village on Worksop Road. The Yellow Lion can be reached on Public transport by taking the 24 Service from Sheffield Interchange or Rotherham ( Please note this service runs from Sheffield every day of the week and Rotherham Monday to Saturday only) and alighting where Aughton Lane Joins Worksop Rd see map. From here walk along Worksop Road following the Motorway sign it should take you 10 - 20 Minutes to Reach the Yellow Lion. There is also the Service X85 from Sheffield and service 25 from Rotherham that will drop you outside the Yellow Lion. (Please note Service X85 is an infrequent service). Yellow Lion - Ulley
The Yellow Lion pub is open all day and serves food and makes an ideal starting place for this walk. On leaving the pub head past the car park and take the next left hand turn following a public footpath sign. This track will shortly lead you into a field. Walk up the edge of the field you will then join an unsurfaced track keep going straight on up the hill. The Vodafone mast can be seen slightly to your left. The track evenutually takes a sharp left finally bringing you to the telephone mast. Watch out for the trig point in the hedgerow on your right hand side just before reaching the mast. From this point there are some fine views towards Sheffield and Rotherham. At the phone mast turn Right down a rough track you will shortly arrive at a at a Public footpath sign where you turn left. Ulley Village can now be seen ahead. The path takes you along the edge of a field and then across some more fields. You then pass through the end of Spring wood. Ulley can be seen clearly from this point. Once past the wood the path drops sharply downhill and crosses a stream and finally up another field before reaching Ulley. You enter the village of Ulley just before you reach the Royal Oak pub. Here food is served but is only open at dinnertime and evenings. Ulley - Aughton
To continue the walk go past the Royal Oak and turn left at the T junction into Main Street and continue through Ulley village. At the end of Ulley village turn right into resevoir Road. Ulley resevoir can now be seen in front of you. Proceed down the hill to the start of the bridge across the resevoir. Here you have a choice you can either take the short route across the bridge or walk round the lake by going through the gate on your right hand side. If you choose to walk round the lake the path is well defined and will bring you out at the opposite end of the bridge see map. Once on the other side of the bridge go through the gate on your left hand side and follow the path round the side of the lake and across the dam wall. Once across the dam wall you will arrive at Ulley country park rangers office. There is shop and toilets here. Form here busses can be caught to Rotherham and Swallownest and various points beyond. The service 25 passes here and will take you back to the Yellow Lion. Please note 24 passes here Monday to Saturday and will take you back to Aston village and Sheffield. The service 21 also passes here every day of the week and will take you to the end of Lodge lane a short walk from Aston village This bus also passes through Swallownest where regular busses to Sheffield can be caught for more information visit sypte. To carry on the walk to Aughton keep following the edge of the resevoir. Where the resevior ends you will come to a lane. turn right up the lane and this will. bring you to a crossroads. You are now at Aughton. Turn left and you will shortly reach the Robin Hood pub. From here buses can be caught to Rotherham and Swallownest, and points beyond. The service 25 passes here and will take you back to the Yellow Lion. Again please note 24 (Monday to Saturday only) and 21 can be caught here. For regular busses to Sheffield travel to Swallownest. To walk back to Aston turn left up Aston Lane just before the Robin Hood, Approx 20 - 30 mins.
